Dr. Joel Turner
Dr. Turner has lived in Baltimore for over 35 years and received his medical degree from the University Of Maryland School Of Medicine. He completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Maryland Hospital. In addition, he obtained further training in advanced laparoscopic procedures during his fellowship, also at the University of Maryland Hospital. During residency and fellowship he was exposed to a broad range of advanced laparoscopic procedures involving solid organs (spleen, kidney, adrenal) as well as hollow organs (stomach, small bowel, large bowel). In addition, he received extensive training in endocrine surgery from one of the states busiest endocrine surgeons, Dr. William Scovill.
Dr. Turner has been a member of the GBMC community since 1999. He is currently the Vice Chairman of the department of surgery as well as the Chief of Minimally Invasive Surgery.
His practice specializes in endocrine and advanced laparoscopic procedures ( Nissen Fundoplication, Heller Myotomy, ventral hernia repair) as well as general surgery. He has extensive experience in endocrine surgery (thyroidectomy, parathyroidectomy, laparoscopic adrenalectomy) having performed over 1700 endocrine cases while at GBMC. Dr. Turner is a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and is an active member in the American College of Surgeons and the society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons.
Dr. Turner is married to Dr. Jennifer Heller and has one daughter, Hannah. He not only enjoys surgery but is also an avid hiker and biker.
